Understanding Islamophobia

Islamophobia is more than just offensive comments — it’s a form of discrimination rooted in fear and misinformation about Islam and Muslims. It can affect individuals emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Islamophobia can show up in many ways, including:

  • Verbal abuse or slurs

  • Online harassment or trolling

  • Vandalism of mosques or Islamic centres

  • Physical assault or intimidation

  • Bullying at school or workplace discrimination

  • Biased media reporting or exclusion from services

Islamophobia is unacceptable. At Melbourne Grand Mosque, we are committed to fostering a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for all.

If You Experience Islamophobia

If you or someone you know has been harmed or targeted because of your faith:

  1. Ensure your safety – Remove yourself from the situation if possible.

  2. Seek support – Talk to someone you trust. You are not alone.

  3. Report the incident

    • In an emergency, call 000 immediately.

    • Non-urgent incidents can be reported to your local police station.

    • Lodge a report – contact us to find out about the Islamophobia Register and how we can support you.

  4. Document it – Record what happened, take photos if safe to do so, and write down any details (date, location, names, etc.).

  5. Get emotional support – Islamophobia can have lasting emotional effects. Reach out to a counsellor, psychologist, or local support services.
